Gate Swing Direction: Verify that all gates providing access to the pool area swing outwards, away from the pool. This ensures that the gate will not accidentally block or allow easy access to the pool.

Self-Closing Devices: Ensure that gates are fitted with a self-closing device that automatically returns them to the closed position and engages the latching mechanism from any position, without the need for manual force. This feature helps in maintaining a secure barrier around the pool.

Self-Latching Devices: The gate should be equipped with a self-latching device that activates when the gate closes. This device should prevent the gate from being reopened without manual release, ensuring it remains securely shut.

Latching Device Adjustability:

  • Latching devices must be incapable of being inadvertently adjusted during operation.

  • They should not be able to be locked in the open position.

  • Adjustments should not be possible without the use of tools.

Latch Release Devices:

  • The latch release device must be at least 1500 mm above the finished ground level.

  • Alternatively, it should be shielded for a radius of at least 450 mm from the latch release, with no openings in the shield greater than 10 mm. This prevents children or unauthorised individuals from reaching or manipulating the latch.

Gate Hinges and Gaps:

  • For barriers installed from May 1, 2013, check that gate hinges do not protrude more than 10 mm from the barrier.

  • Ensure the opening between the gate post and the gate stile does not exceed 10 mm.
